Bacon butties for biking commuters

Monday 26th July 2010

Leeds City Council’s road safety team marked Ride to Work Day (21 July) with a biker’s breakfast in the city centre.

Commuter riders were offered free bacon butties and mugs of tea while discussing road safety issues with road safety team members and officers from the West Yorkshire Police Bikesafe team. The mayor of Leeds also came along to talk bikes at the event, which was part of National Motorcycle Week.

Dave Glanville, West Yorkshire’s PTW RSO, said: "Events like this are a great way to engage with commuter riders.

“There is a common perception that riders are most at risk on fast rural routes. While that may be true in some areas of West Yorkshire, a lot of our casualties occur in peak morning and evening commuter times.

“We're offering advice about dealing with heavy traffic and how they can help to keep themselves safer, as well as raising awareness among other motorists that they need to 'THINK bike’.”

Bacon butties are right up my street. Pity my street isn't in Leeds. A nice touch Dave. A good way to engage with riders without preaching or prosecuting. Well done.

Personally I believe in small events like this, the more the better. Lets have a more pro-active stance involving the police and others and enjoy a dialogue with motorcyclists and scooter riders in this way, by listening we can achieve a greater understanding of how problems can be addressed and dangers eliminated - small moves but many of them.
