Road safety film competition to run for second year
In the can, the competition that challenges young people to make a road safety film, is to run for a second year.
In the can was first launched in September 2009 and ran until April 2010. It attracted more than 50 entries from individuals, teams of young people and educational establishments from across England.
The two winning films were produced by two 18-year-old girls from Chelmsford, Essex, and a team of pupils from Norton College in North Yorkshire. The winning films and all other 2009/10 entries can be viewed on the competition website.
In the can is open to young people aged 21 years or younger. There are two categories, for young people working off their own initiative and for educational establishments. As was the case in 2009/10, prize money will total £2,500 – with £1,000 first prize and £250 runner-up prize in each category.
The 2010/11 competition launched on 13 September 2010 and close on 30 April 2011. Judging will take place in May 2011, with the winners announced in late May/early June 2011.
In the can was initially conceived by Suffolk County Council’s road safety team and is managed by Stennik, a specialist road safety communications consultancy.
All of the road safety teams that participated last time round will do so again this time. A small surplus in the 2009/10 budget means these teams will not be asked to make a further financial contribution. Other road safety teams are welcome to participate for a subscription of £1,000 plus VAT.
Sally Bartrum, project manager at Stennik, said: “We were pleased to attract 50 entries in year one and have been encouraged by the people who entered, especially schools and colleges, to continue for a second year.
“We realise there is an acute shortage of finance available for road safety campaigns, which is why we’re delighted to be able to run the campaign this year without further cost to last year’s participants.
“We’re hoping to attract a commercial sponsor to cover the prize money and some of our time, but even if we are unsuccessful the campaign will definitely run.”
