Video shows motorists how to overtake cyclists

Thursday 26th May 2011

A video clip showing motorists how to safely overtake cyclists is being promoted to coincide with the national ‘Team Green Britain Bike Week’ (18 – 26 June).

The clip is being used by Mayo County Council in Ireland to educate the public about bicycle safety and encourages drivers and cyclists to share the road.

Noel Gibbons, Mayo’s road safety officer, says: “Drivers need to know that cyclists have a right to the road and cyclists need to know that drivers are looking out for their safety. That's why we all need to work together to take simple steps to share the road and keep our roads safe."

Thérèse Ruane, chairperson of Smart Travel Castlebar, says: “Cycling is becoming more and more popular, but it's really important that motorists and cyclists act responsibly on the road to ensure safety for everyone. This video clip will go a long way to ensure that we can all share the road in a safe and responsible way.”

Have watched the clip and thank god it has not been reproduced over here.

A cyclepath reduced the road width and generally forces a larger vehicle to cross over the centre white lines. if not then that vehicle has to wait behind said cyclist doing 10 mph untill it is clear to do so. That said although its not against the law for cyclists to double up and have a nice chat, its very inconsiderate. [lack of consideration is an offence for all other vehicles under the road traffic acts] and also whilst being aware that a line of traffic is now building up behind not moving over. It would be a courtesy if they moved into single file to allow other moving traffic to overtake with greater safety both to themselves and other road users.

Cyclists must use there heads more and do lifesavers and observe traffic behind as often as they can and especially if they are to undertake a manouver such as passing a parked vehicle, rather than just pull out without such consicerations.
