Leicestershire’s JRSO scheme celebrates 25th anniversary
Leicestershire County Council’s Junior Road Safety Officer (JRSO) scheme is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month, during which time it has recruited more than 10,000 youngsters to the scheme.
Each year, primary school head teachers nominate two JRSOs to increase road safety awareness among fellow pupils and across the wider school community.
JRSO tasks typically include looking after a notice board, running a road safety club or competition and giving assembly messages about staying safe on the roads.
A series of celebratory evenings were held recently to welcome this year’s JRSOs and brief them on their role, and celebrate the scheme’s 25th birthday.
Lesley Pendleton, county council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “This is a fantastic scheme and the fact it is still going strong after 25 years is testament to this.
“Road safety is obviously incredibly important. What this initiative does is make learning about it fun, as well as giving the JRSOs the opportunity to develop their leadership and creative skills.
“I would like to thank all JRSOs, past and present, for helping to spread these important messages to their peers.”
