Conference presentation will discuss making speeders ‘Snow White'
A presentation by psychologist Fiona Fylan at the 2013 National Road Safety Conference will explore the effectiveness of the National Speed Awareness Course, in terms of converting speeding motorists into ‘Snow White’.
More than 200 people have registered to attend the conference in Harrogate, 13-14 November. It is being hosted by Road Safety GB Yorkshire and Humberside Region and sponsored by Colas, AA DriveTech and FirstCar.
Fiona Fylan’s presentation, titled “Sleepy, Dopey, Grumpy or Happy: Making the Speeder Snow White”, will show that the National Speed Awareness Course is effective in changing the psychological predictors of driver behavior.
Fiona will explore the different types of speeding driver and how the course addresses their different reasons for speeding. Her presentation will include data from both quantitative and qualitative studies which highlights how the course achieves its effects, and will identify some of the challenges trainers face when delivering road user behavioural change interventions.
Fiona Fylan is a reader in psychology at Leeds Metropolitan University. As a health psychologist she has expertise in understanding how people make decisions, and in helping them to make more appropriate or less risky decisions.
Fiona specialises in driver behaviour, and specifically in understanding why people drive the way they do; the way in which they think about driving; and how to change the decisions they make when driving in order to increase safe and responsible driver behaviour.
Fiona is the academic lead on the NDORS strategic board for course development and has led evaluations of local and national driver offender schemes, including RIDE, the National Driver Improvement Scheme and the National Speed Awareness Course.
She has also undertaken major pieces of policy work for the Department for Work and Pensions, the Department for Education, and Her Majesty’s Prison Service.
