Report influences cyclists’ safety campaigns
A report that has helped influence initiatives to improve the safety of cyclists in the Yorkshire and Humber region will be presented at *RoSPA’s 2014 Road Safety Conference on 25 February.
The Yorkshire and Humber Cycle Report, which was produced in 2012 by Safer Roads Humber using data from MAST, presents a wealth of information about the region's casualty and collision data. The report is freely available for download for subscribers to the Road Safety Knowledge Centre.
The report looks at both cyclists and drivers involved in cycle collisions and includes socio-demographic profiling of the different groups to help direct road safety campaigns.
Ruth Gore, Safer Roads Humber, said: “The report’s findings have influenced a number of the region’s road safety projects.
“The Someone’s Son (motorcycling campaign) website has been extended to include information about cycling.
“We’ve used a radio advertising campaign to ask drivers to give cyclists space and to explain the primary and secondary positions cyclists may take up on the road.
“We’ve also produced The Urban Cycle Guide DVD which is aimed at adult urban commuters.
“And with the Tour de France Grand Depart taking place in Yorkshire in July 2014, we are currently developing a mobile phone app which will offer advice to cyclists riding the route and in rural areas.”
*Footnote: RoSPA’s 2014 conference, Road Safety and the Cycling Revolution, is being held at the Crowne Plaza in Birmingham on 25 February. The agenda includes a joint presentation by Trish Hirst and Kathryn MacKay from City of York Council’s road safety team, who will present the report referred to in this article, and discuss how the Tour de France ‘Grand Depart’ is providing an opportunity for road safety partnerships in the region to promote cycling and put out a strong safety message.
