Publishing expert to speak at young driver event

Wednesday 26th February 2014

Bill Pope, from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), is the latest confirmed speaker for the young driver conference to be held in May 2014.

The event, “Young driver focus”, is a collaborative partnership between Road Safety GB and FirstCar, supported by Arval who are providing the venue, technology and refreshments. It is free to attend for Road Safety GB Academy members. The capacity is around 150 delegates and there is a handful of places still available.

The DVSA encourages people to study for their theory while learning in the car with a qualified instructor, in order to instil their knowledge with some personal meaning and an understanding of how it should influence a driver's actions.

In his presentation Bill, who is head of learning materials at the DVSA, will set out how DVSA's learning materials promote these values, support young drivers to cover the syllabus comprehensively and support instructors to complement what they glean from them.

Bill Pope has been a publisher since the late eighties and joined the DVSA (formerly the Driving Standards Agency) in 2006. He has seen technologies come and go but believes that publishing is the same now as ever: engage and inform a target audience that you know will benefit from what your authors have to say. He applies this philosophy to DVSA's apps, web and e-learning, books, e-books and magazines.

Young Driver Focus will look at “cutting young driver casualties now and in the future”. As this suggests the event will be forward-focused rather than a retrospective look at young driver collisions and casualties.

It will be held at The Arval Centre in Swindon (just off the M4) on Wednesday 14 May 2014, 10.00am – 3.30pm.

The event is FOC for Academy members and the delegate fee for other public sector attendees is just £35 plus VAT. The fee for delegates from the private sector is £100 plus VAT. As stated earlier, there is a small number of delegate places still available.
