Public health specialist will address National Conference
Delegates attending the National Road Safety Conference in November 2014 will be asked to consider “how many lives are you saving without even knowing it?”.
The question will be posed in a presentation by Lucy Saunders, the public health specialist in transport and public realm for Transport for London (TfL) and the Greater London Authority.
Lucy Saunders has worked as a public health specialist across a wide range of organisations from local to international level including the NHS, government, academic, private and voluntary sector.
In her current role Lucy leads on the integration of transport and public health in London, supporting TfL, London boroughs and advocacy organisations. In 2014 TfL became the first transport authority in the world to publish a Health Action Plan and Lucy leads on its implementation.
Lucy has a masters degrees in geography and public health and gained Fellowship of the UK Faculty of Public Health. She is a NICE scholar and academician of the Academy of Urbanism.
In her presentation, Lucy will consider road safety in the context of public health, and will contend that the shift of public health responsibilities to local authorities is an opportunity to reflect on the much broader health benefits of road safety activity.
She will explain how road safety measures can benefit the health and wellbeing of communities from reducing the prevalence of diabetes, stroke and dementia to increasing social cohesion.
She will also discuss how drawing out these wider benefits of road safety will not only get buy-in from public health practitioners but also political leaders and communities.
