Cycling app on course for Yellow Jersey
A mobile phone app developed by the road safety partnership across Yorkshire and Humber has been named a finalist in the Digital Entrepreneur Awards 2014.
The app, ‘Cycle Yorkshire – Ride the Routes’, is a finalist in the ‘Digital Community Pioneer of the Year’ category.
The Digital Entrepreneur Awards recognise online business excellence and celebrate not only high-profile websites and leaders driving online commerce, but also the “silent heroes who develop the systems that change the online landscape and shape our digital future”.
Cycle Yorkshire – Ride the Routes offers tips and advice to cyclists about safe riding in rural areas and was originally produced to assist riders drawn to the region by the 2014 Tour de France Grand Dèpart in Yorkshire. It is now being used by riders who want to follow in the tracks of their cycling heroes on both Yorkshire stages of 'Le Tour'.
Safer Roads Yorkshire and Humber has developed a range of cycling road safety projects, with the City of York taking the lead on the app’s creation.
The app incorporates 'flyover' scenic maps of the routes, as well as videos of York-based semi-pro cyclist, Jamie Sharp, tackling some of the most challenging sections.
Ruth Gore, project team member, said: “The app, although based around the Tour de France routes, gives great advice for cycling on all sorts of rural roads, as well as including guidance on tackling some of the more challenging sections of the Tour routes in Yorkshire.”
The free app has been downloaded more than 4,000 times and is backed by Welcome to Yorkshire. It can be downloaded for Apple and Android devices at the following link - bit.ly/cycleyorkshire - or by searching the Google or Apple stores for 'Cycle Yorkshire'.
The Digital Entrepreneur Awards 2014 will be presented at a ceremony in Manchester on the evening of 9 October.
