Scottish partnership pledges support for global campaign

Thursday 4th December 2014

Road Safety West of Scotland* has signed up to support #SaveKidsLives, the official campaign of the third UN Global Road Safety Week which will be held 4-10 May 2015.

#SaveKidsLives is calling for action to save children’s lives on the roads around the world. The campaign is highlighting their plight and setting out to generate worldwide action to better ensure the safety of children on the roads.

The campaign operates on the principles of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 and is managed by a broad coalition of members from the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration. It is also calling for the inclusion of safe and sustainable transport in the post-2015 development agenda.

Councillor Robert Steel, chair of Road Safety West of Scotland, recently visited Whitehirst Park Primary School in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire to have a ‘safie’ taken with pupils who were undertaking cycle training, and at the same time sign up Road Safety West of Scotland to support #SaveKidsLives.

Councillor Steel said: “Over the last 10 years in Scotland we have seen substantial reductions in the number of children killed or seriously injured on the roads.

“Unfortunately these reductions are not replicated globally and every three minutes somewhere in the world a child dies on the road. We therefore have a responsibility to lend our support to these countries and assist in whatever way we can to promote safer roads.”
