Global Road Safety Week – round up of activity from across the UK

During the course of last we published live updates, as we received them, on activities being carried out across the UK.

Road safety teams and others – there is still time to send us details of activity in your area.

Hertfordshire
Knebworth Primary School has been awarded a certificate by Hertfordshire's road safety team for running three years of road safety education for Year 4 pupils, while Year 4 pupils from Monksmead Primary School took part in Pedestrian Skills KS2 and learnt lots about road safety.


County Durham
Junior Road Safety Officers from schools in County Durham have been busy packing bags containing road safety teaching resources, pens, pencils and JRSO packs ready to give to teachers from their 12 partner schools in Botswana and Tanzania when they visit in June 2015. More

 

Tilehurst, Berkshire
We have had great fun this week getting involved in Global Road Safety Week. We have entered poster competitions, investigated travel to school around the world, designed road safety booklets and had a Walking Bus to raise awareness of safe travel to school.

Nationwide - tyre safety campaign
TyreSafe is running a campaign to encourage children to remind adults that keeping tyres in good condition helps reduce the chances of accidents and child causalities.  Using the ‘TyreSafe 20p test’, children are showing parents how they can gauge whether their vehicle’s tyre tread depths are legal or not, a key factor in influencing its ability to stop. More



Swindon ( and nationwide)
Arval, one of the UK's leading vehicle leasing and contract hire companies, is asking its employees to sign the online #SaveKidsLives declaration and circulate a poster which contains key messages to promote child road safety. Click here to download the poster (PDF).

 


Hampshire
Hampshire Police is working with partners at several child car seat safety check events across the county where people can pop along and ensure their child’s seat is correctly fitted. The checks are free and no booking is required. More info and dates and venues.

 


Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough Council’s Road Safety Team and Cleveland Fire Brigade are visiting local schools to get across key safety messages and organise 'seatbelt assemblies' when Seatbelt Sheriff Lynn Hepworth, Middlesbrough’s Road Safety Officer, will demonstrate the importance of wearing a seat belt and using an appropriate child car seat. West Midlands
Pupils in Birmingham and Coventry are joining police teams from the West Midlands Force on practical exercises including Speed Watch operations. More...

 


Hull
Hull City Council is working in partnership with Good Egg Car Safety and Humberside Fire & Rescue Service to organise a number of child car seat clinics around the city to provide advice on buying, choosing and fitting the right car seat as well as checking to make sure seats are fitted correctly. South Yorkshire
There is a variety of activities and event taking place across the region, organised by the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership. More


Scotland
Scotland's Junior Road Safety Officers are being asked to design a logo for Scottish Road Safety Week, which is being run to support Global Road Safety Week. The new logo will be used for certificates and promotional purposes. More


West Berkshire
Jackie Livermore, deputy head teacher at Westwood Farm Junior School in Tilehurst, visited Gunjur in the Gambia to meet with a head teacher at a school there to discuss the differences in journeys to school and the safety of children on the roads. More...
