Junior Road Safety Officer forum generates six questions
The second of our four live online forums produced six questions on how to set up and operate a junior road safety officer (JRSO) scheme in primary schools.
Three JRSO experts - Alison Lonsdale (Durham County Council), Harry Tipple (London Borough of Hackney) and Heather Bolton (Telford & Wrekin Council) – answered questions in real time during the live session earlier today.
All of the forums are free of charge and open to everyone including parents, teachers and road safety professionals, both here in the UK and other parts of the world.
A JRSO scheme involves young people in promoting road safety to their peers by encouraging them to behave responsibly near roads and set a good example. The scheme also enables young people to act as ambassadors of “active” travel (walking, cycling, scooting etc) by promoting its benefits in terms of health, independence and the environment.
Road Safety GB has produced a simple guide giving advice about JRSO schemes. The guide is available free of charge and covers issues including how to get started, suggested JRSO activities, the benefits of a JRSO scheme and examples of schemes across the UK.
The other online forums scheduled for later this week are:
• Thurs 7 May: in-car safety for children
• Friday 8 May: children as pedestrians
The children and cycling forum which was held yesterday (5 May) produced seven questions from parents and others. The questions and answers are available to view here.
Other resources produced in the UK in support of Global Road Safety Week are:
• A suite of road safety resources for children - including activity sheets, maps and country profilers – which are available free to download.
• A series of simple ‘how to’ guides to help educators and others teach basic road safety to children.
• A database of road safety professionals with expertise with regard to child road safety, who are willing to provide advice and support to people in other parts of the world.
New website includes members’ portal and info on training courses etc
