Local company to sponsor road safety education
A local company has agreed to sponsor road safety education in two Leamington primary schools under a new arrangement coming into effect later this year.
From September 2015, the way that road safety in Warwickshire is delivered in primary schools will change. All schools have the opportunity to sign up to the Warwickshire Road Safety Club, but most will need to pay a small charge for the education they receive from it.
Over the past few months Warwickshire County Council’s road safety team has been making contact with local businesses to encourage them to sponsor road safety in their local primary schools.
As well as helping to keep children and other vulnerable road users safe, participating organisations show a commitment to playing an active and supportive role in their local community.
O’Brien’s Contractors, based in Cubbington, have agreed to sponsor road safety education at Cubbington Primary School and Our Lady and St Teresa’s Primary School for the next two years. The company has made a donation of £3,200 to offer support which will enable the schools to have the complete Warwickshire Road Safety Club package, which comprises a range of initiatives including the Junior Road Safety Officer scheme, classroom sessions and assemblies and practical pedestrian training.
Councillor Phillip Johnson, Warwickshire County Council, said: "This is a very welcome scheme which helps fulfil the council's commitment to keeping residents safe.
“Inviting sponsorship from local business is a great way to strengthen community relationships and build lasting links between education and the local economy."
Peter O’Brien, managing director, O’Brien Contractors, said: “Having been educated at Our Lady and St Teresa’s Primary School, along with my two brothers, we welcomed the opportunity to play our part with Warwickshire County Council and the two schools.
“The importance of road safety cannot be stressed enough and as a significant employer in the area, we welcomed the chance to get involved in the road safety scheme, ensuring the welfare of the young people in Cubbington.”
