Presentation will explore links between active travel and road safety
The intrinsic links between school children, active travel and road safety will be examined at the 2016 National Road Safety Conference.
This relationship will be discussed in a presentation about the Modeshift STARS award scheme, which will look at how young people can be encouraged to choose safer and more active options for the journey to school.
The presentation will be delivered by Nick Butler (pictured), National STARS manager, who oversees the scheme nationwide.
Modeshift STARS is a national awards scheme that has been established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel.
More than 2,000 schools are using the online STARS system to plan and record all the travel activity they deliver, including a full site audit and an annual travel survey.
Nick Butler has more than 13 years’ experience in developing and implementing sustainable transport programmes in the public, private and community sectors.
His career includes a spell with Darlington Borough Council and two years as the DfT’s regional school travel advisor for the North East and Yorkshire & The Humber regions.
Nick was appointed vice-chair to Modeshift in 2011 and during that time managed the Modeshift STARS Schools programme, before becoming the National STARS manager in March 2015.
