BMW launches free ‘virtual lab’ educational app

Wednesday 31st May 2017

The BMW Group has created a digital learning resource to help teachers provide a ‘hands-on and smarter’ approach to delivering sustainability and road safety lessons.

Launched in April, the free ‘Virtual Lab’ app is designed for pupils aged 11-14 years and includes curriculum linked lessons to show pupils how sustainability and design ideas can help reduce carbon footprints.

The app consists of two ‘theme paths’ - design and sustainability - containing interactive games, together with explanatory videos and texts.

The app is part of the BMW Group’s education programme, which was recently updated to feature new 3D characters guiding pupils through road safety scenarios in ‘Safe on the Streets’.

Safe on the Streets, BMW’s flagship road safety education programme, is designed to equip pupils aged 7-11 years to make safer decisions when walking or cycling, or travelling in the car.

The BMW Group says the launch of its new, curriculum linked education programme continues its legacy of providing free and accessible education to young people, with a focus on its expertise in road safety and sustainability.

Graham Biggs, communications director for BMW Group UK, said: “Education is vital to building a sustainable future, and we are passionate about how digital apps can be used in the classroom to bring these subjects to life.

“We want students to gain a better understanding of future mobility and encourage them to look for imaginative solutions to some of the challenges society is facing.”
