Luton SCP in frame for National Transport Award

Wednesday 19th May 2010

A school crossing patrol in Luton has been nominated for the ‘frontline employee of the year’ category in the National Transport Awards.

Margaret Wiggett OBE, SCP at Stopsley Primary School, began working for Luton Borough Council in 1965 and on 31 May will have completed 45 years’ service on the same site.

During this time she has crossed three generations and more than one million children on their journey to and from school. She has only been off sick for a total of 15 days, due to a planned operation.

Margaret is described as ‘an excellent ambassador for the council’, as much a part of Stopsley life as the nearby War Memorial. She regularly talks to the Foundation classes about the role of the SCP and in 1995 the school governors successfully nominated her for a MBE.

Margaret says: “People talk about the ‘good old days’ but things now generally are much better. All things to do with road safety only get better and there are improvements all the time.”

The National Transport Awards take place on 15 July at Palace Hotel, Manchester, and we all wish Margaret every success.
