Leicestershire SCPs do much more than cross

Wednesday 26th May 2010

School crossing patrols in Leicestershire are getting involved in wider aspects of road safety including assisting with pedestrian and cycle skills training.

Following a successful pilot scheme this initiative now operates in 40 schools across the county and is well regarded by schools and patrollers alike.

Nigel Horsley, road safety team manager, said: “The role of the school crossing patrol is an important and valuable one. Our patrollers do a terrific job in all weathers and traffic conditions helping to make the school journey easier and safer for pupils and parents.

“They are respected members of the community and it seems a natural progression to offer additional road safety work. They help greatly with assisting our road safety tutors with practical training and education.”

Following the recent article from Leics CC regarding additional road safety work by Patrollers. In Northampotonshire, the School Crossing Patrol Service have also formed a 'partnership' with the County's Cycle Training Officer, Anton Kolodynski. Our School Crossing Patrol Area Supervisor Jackie Iveson has successfully completed the 'Bikability' Instructor Training Progamme and is, as part of a shared resource initiative, now carrying our cycle training in schools. In the last year, 2,000 children have taken part the Bikeability Training Scheme at Level 2.
