The 2016/17 All Wales Winter Anti Drink/Drug Driving Campaign saw a small increase in the percentage of positive tests for drink driving, while the proportion of drug drive arrests doubled.
In total, 18,408 people were tested as part of the 2016/17 campaign – down 19% on 2015/16. 3.4% of those tested were over either the drink or drug drive limit.
151 (0.8%) drivers tested positive for drug-driving, compared with 99 (0.4%) in the previous campaign.
In terms of drink-driving, 478 drivers (2.6%) either tested positive, refused or failed the test. While the actual number of positive tests is slightly down on last year (498), in percentage terms this represents a slight increase (up from 2.2%).
In terms of location, North Wales Police conducted the most tests (9,448), followed by Dyfed Powys (4,512), South Wales (3,963) and Gwent (485).
Assistant chief constable Jeremy Vaughan, All Wales lead for roads policing, said: “Overall in Wales, we have seen a slight increase in the number of arrests, refusals or failures compared to last year.
“We would like to thank the public of Wales for their assistance in providing us with information about drink drivers and we would like to reassure them that we will continue to use intelligence and technology to target those minority of drivers who continue to flout the law.”

Motorcycle bashes are now coming into season and there are many of them. In the main they do not appear to be of any trouble but many riders take them as an excuse for a weekend binge drinking session. There will be instances of motorcyclists, trike riders and others returning home on Sunday and being well over the drink drive limit under the influence of alcohol. Many police forces know this and appear to do little or nothing but turn their backs on this unlawful and dangerous practise.
