Christmas campaign comprises jingle competition

Public participation is being encouraged in a novel approach to tackle drink driving in Sussex this Christmas.

The Sussex Safer Roads Partnership (SSRP) says that young people present the biggest problem in relation to drink driving at Christmas. Just over one-third of drivers impaired by alcohol in its area were aged 17-25 years.

To raise awareness of the problem SSRP has devised a competition open to individuals and groups of all ages.

Neil Hopkins, SSRP communications manager, said: “Many people know that when a glass is partly full of liquid, you can run your finger around the rim to make a sound.

“We have recorded an attempt to play ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’ on a mobile phone and have uploaded it to our website.

“We are inviting the public to try and do better than us and there’s a prize on offer for the best individual and group entries, which is decided by a public vote.”

The competition rules state that entries must include an anti drink-driving message.

The deadline for entries is 21 December and the public vote will open on 22 December. The winners will be informed on 3 January 2011.
