GEM Motoring Assist, in conjunction with The London Road Safety Council, has launched a national campaign to encourage drivers and riders to ensure that any medication they may be taking will not adversely affect their driving.
A poll carried out by the road safety charity revealed that one in 10 drivers admitted their ability to drive had been impaired after taking medication, while seven out of 10 drivers thought they were not given enough information about medicines and driving.
Dr Chris Steele MBE, ITV’s This Morning’s resident health expert, endorsed the campaign, saying: “In some circumstances driving while impaired by medication can be as dangerous as drink driving.
“I strongly support the advice given in this leaflet that drivers taking medication should always check with their doctor or pharmacist before they drive.”
David Williams MBE, chief executive of GEM, said: “There is so much confusion on the part of road users regarding this matter and we hope that our free information leaflet will help them to seek professional medical guidance.”
