The four live Global Road Safety Week online forums hosted last week by Road Safety GB generated a total of 34 questions on topics including child car seats, the JRSO scheme and the safety of children as cyclists and pedestrians.
Road Safety GB assembled a panel of experts for each forum which took place at lunchtime each day last week (except Monday).
The forums were free of charge and open to everyone including parents, teachers and road safety professionals, both here in the UK and other parts of the world.
The in-car safety forum was by far the busiest, with 19 questions about child car seats, mainly from anxious mums and grandparents. The forum suggests there is some confusion about the merits of forward and rear facing seats, and the new i-Size regulations. The cycling forum produced seven questions while the JRSO and pedestrian forums each produced six questions.
Honor Byford, chair of Road Safety GB, said: "I would like to express my sincere thanks to all of the facilitators who gave their time to deliver these forums.
"All of the forums were excellent, positive sessions with meaty questions from a variety of people including parents, teachers and road safety professionals.
"The questions and responses will stay online for the foreseeable future, and be uploaded to the Road Safety Knowledge Centre, and will be read by many more people than those who participated on the day."
The questions and answers from all the forums – on children and cycling, the Junior Road Safety Officer scheme, child car seats and chldren as pedestrians – are available to view online.
Other resources produced in the UK in support of Global Road Safety Week are:
• A suite of road safety resources for children – including activity sheets, maps and country profilers – which are available free to download.
• A series of simple ‘how to’ guides to help educators and others teach basic road safety to children.
• A database of road safety professionals with expertise with regard to child road safety, who are willing to provide advice and support to people in other parts of the world.
