‘Green Cone’ solution to school run parking problems

Schools across Caerphilly in South Wales are operating a ‘Green Cone’ scheme to help combat the problem of motorists parking inconsiderately.

Green traffic cones are placed on both sides of the road so that the school crossing patrol officer has a clear view in both directions and the children can cross safely.

Cllr Rob Gough, cabinet member for transportation and planning said: "This simple idea has been very successful and we are seeing a reduction in parking problems and congestion during the school run.

“The council is keen to provide pupils with safer routes to school and this is one of a number of measures that are helping to make a difference."

The scheme was recently introduced at Ynysddu Primary School and PC Alan Tinsley from Gwent Police said:  "Parents and residents have already said that the green cones have helped to ease the traffic problems that were being experienced outside the school.

“Our main aim is to ensure that the children get to and from school safely as previously there were too many vehicles trying to park outside the school at the same time, which could have posed a danger to the pupils."

Six schools originally piloted the scheme back in 2006 and now 27 schools are taking part in the Green Cone scheme.
