IAM RoadSmart appoints new younger driver ambassador

IAM RoadSmart has announced that David Gallagher will be its younger driver ambassador for 2017/18, thereby becoming ‘the voice of younger drivers nationwide’.

The 23-year-old, from Sedgley near Wolverhampton, won the road safety charity’s ‘Get Into The Driving Seat’ competition, which culminated with an interview by a panel including the former F1 world champion Nigel Mansell CBE.

David Gallagher follows in the footsteps of Eloise Peabody-Rolf, who will step down from the post in August 2017.

The one-year internship will see David take on a variety of responsibilities including lobbying for change within IAM RoadSmart.

He will also visit schools and colleges and work with the charity’s 200 plus groups throughout the UK in a bid to attract younger drivers to IAM RoadSmart.

IAM RoadSmart says David’s credentials for the post go back a long way. He learnt to drive ‘unofficially’ age 11 years on private land and confesses to being into ‘anything with an engine’ including ride-on lawnmowers!

After passing his driving test first time at the age of 17 years, David became involved in his local IAM RoadSmart group in Wolverhampton, quickly becoming its young driver representative. He also took the Advanced Driving Test and achieved a F1RST standard.

David Gallagher said: “I am delighted to have landed the job and can’t wait to get started. I feel it’s really important to get younger drivers interested in what IAM RoadSmart can offer while they are still in the learning mindset.

“I really hope I can make a difference, even in a small way.”

David will start his new role with IAM RoadSmart at the beginning of September.
