IAM RoadSmart publishes drink-drive toolkit

IAM RoadSmart’s Driver Retraining Academy (DRA) has published a new toolkit which provides background information on drink-drive charges for members of the legal profession.

The toolkit, which is available to order online, is designed to help solicitors show their clients the benefits of taking a Drink Drive Rehabilitation Course (DDRC). The kit also includes a fact sheet on drink driving and leaflets and posters for distribution.

The IAM RoadSmart DRA has 120 course locations across England and claims to be the biggest provider of drink drive rehabilitation courses in Wales.

Taking the DDRC enables a candidate to apply for a reduction of up to 25% in the length of their driving ban, potentially cutting a 24-month ban by six months. Since 2013 the DRA says its education and support programmes have helped more than 6,000 drivers to shorten their bans.

IAM RoadSmart says despite decades of high-profile campaigns, drink driving is still a significant problem in the UK. It points to statistics which show there were 35,000 drink-drive offences recorded in the nine months up to August 2015.

Sarah Sillars, IAM RoadSmart chief executive officer, said: “Drink driving is a serious offence with dangerous consequences but many people don’t understand the full risk.

“We believe targeted retraining courses should always be the first choice as a response. These courses should deal with the individual’s relationship with alcohol – not just the offence itself.

“Most people who are facing a conviction are terrified of the outcome and a solicitor is often their only point of contact ahead of a hearing. We want to work with legal professionals to support them in providing the very best support to their clients.”
