‘Moment of madness’ highlights the importance of awareness

Performing arts students from Nelson & Colne College teamed up with Lancashire’s Road Safety Group to develop a performance to show young people the implications and repercussions of driving without due care and attention.

The students spoke with police and ambulance services, parents of crash victims and even the mortuary to gain a better understanding of what happens after a serious traffic crash. They then devised a performance, ‘A Moment of Madness’, which tells the story of a group of teens whose lives are altered forever after one of them decides to drive home after a night out.

The play depicts the ‘domino’ effect that such a catastrophe can have, not only on the victim, but also their friends, family and other witnesses.

The young actors performed their play to other students at the college and an audience from Lancashire’s Road Safety Group.

Alan Fisher, deputy road safety group manager, said: “I’ve been involved with road safety for 39 years and can honestly say that I have never seen anything as fantastic as what you have done today. It was superb, exceptionally well produced and the message sticks. Community theatre is vital to getting key messages out and you’ve done yourselves proud.”

Student Lizzie Davis, who is studying for a Level 3 National Diploma in Performing Arts, said: “It really hits the spot and explains how significant the domino effect is in this sort of situation. It was really powerful.”

Ann Finch, also from the road safety group, who originally conceived the idea, was thrilled with the performance: “I never ever imagined that you would do this so well and I’m truly amazed by what you have done. You took my breath away!”
