The latest resources to be produced in support of Global Road Safety Week (GRSW) 2015 comprise a series of simple guides to help people in other part of the world to deliver basic road safety instruction to children.

The focus for GRSW (4-10 May 2015) is child road safety. Using the slogan #SaveKidsLives, the UN Road Safety Collaboration campaign is seeking to highlight the plight of children on the world’s roads, and generate action to better ensure their safety.

Here in the UK, a comprehensive programme of activities and resources is being prepared by an alliance of road safety organisations headed by Road Safety GB.

The guides are intended to be used by teachers and others involved in educating children who may have little or no road safety expertise or resources. The guides cover children as pedestrians, as cyclists, travelling on public transport and by car. There is also a guide giving advice about setting up a junior road safety officer peer-to-peer scheme, and another giving general tips and advice about teaching road safety to children.

The guides are available free of charge from the GRSW section on the Road Safety GB website. Other resources available include a database of road safety professionals with expertise relating to child road safety, and a series of resources for children both here in the UK and overseas.

We and other organisations are working together and recently published a letter to all the political parties asking them to include road safety priorities and commitments in their manifestos. We will follow this up after the election with the incoming government.
The work we are publicising here is what we are leading on as road safety education, training and publicity professionals. Our aim is to use our particular expertise to develop materials and make them available to anyone, free of charge, so that any teacher, parent of other concerned adult can use these basic resources to help children to learn about safer travel in their own neighbourhood. We are also working with schools and the British Council to link schools here in the UK with schools around the world so that children can communicate direct with other children to compare their journeys to school and see how they can become voices for safer travel wherever they may live.

As far as I can see the primary focus of the #SaveKidsLives programme is to hold adults accountable for the design, management and use of roads which put them so much at risk and danger. I wonder if any “activities and resources” to address this are being provided by the alliance of road safety organisations headed by Road Safety GB?
