Delegates will hear ‘The Honest Truth’

The Honest Truth – a partnership initiative between road safety officers, the police, the fire and rescue service and approved driving instructors – will be presented to delegates at the National Road Safety Conference in Brighton later this year.

The Honest Truth Partnership’s mission is to reduce casualties among young drivers. It was developed in 2009 following a fatal collision in South Devon in which three young people lost their lives.

Using the strapline ‘Small changes save lives’ the partnership sets out to encourage new drivers to make one small change and pass it on to others in vehicles in which they are driving or travelling.

The partnership has produced a resource pack to help ADIs deliver road safety messages to young learner drivers. There are currently more than 900 ADIs participating in the scheme which is being delivered in Devon, Cornwall, Hertfordshire, Swindon, Wiltshire, Cumbria, Staffordshire and Nottinghamshire.

The Honest Truth has been evaluated and has received a number of road safety awards.

The presentation will be delivered by Sergeant Olly Taylor from Devon and Cornwall Police and Rob Carlson, station manager with Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service.

Olly Taylor has been with Devon and Cornwall Police for 21 years and is a specialist in roads policing. He has worked extensively in multi agency partnerships and currently chairs The Honest Truth Partnership. As the father of two teenage sons he is passionate about road safety and very keen to make the roads safer for all.

Rob Carlson joined Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue in 1983. He currently heads up road safety and casualty reduction for the service but is also an operational fire officer regularly attending road traffic collisions. During his 31 years in the service Rob has had to deal with the results of many serious and fatal collisions and is committed, through the Honest Truth Partnership, to reducing the numbers of young people killed and seriously injured on our roads.
