The duo behind the highly successful Road Safety GB twitter feed will outline the pros and cons of using social media at the National Road Safety Conference in November 2014.
The joint presentation, titled ‘Using social media in a professional capacity – the positives and negatives’, will be delivered by Matt Staton and Iain Temperton who head the road safety teams in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk respectively.
While not professing to be experts in the use of social media, Iain and Matt both have a number of years’ experience using various platforms in a personal and professional capacity, including managing the Road Safety GB twitter feed which has attracted more than 6,500 followers.
Their presentation will focus on their experiences, both positive and negative, of using social media in a professional capacity. They will also examine the contrast between using social media as an individual, a local road safety team/partnership and a national organisation. They will also offer some useful tools to make life a bit easier.
Matt Staton, lead road safety officer at Cambridgeshire County Council, has been involved in road safety since 2008, having previously worked as a tennis coach, play worker and nursery nurse.
He has completed the Diploma in Accident and Safety Management and is currently in the final year studying an MSc in Road and Vehicle Safety at Loughborough University’s Transport Safety Research Centre.
Iain Temperton started in the road safety profession as motorcycle instructor at the age of 17 years. He joined Norfolk County Council in 1990 as a road safety officer, spending 12 years delivering road safety education in schools. He then took on the role of driver and rider development manager, creating a team to deliver a wide range of vehicle based interventions.
In addition to his current role of team manager, Iain is a DSA registered car and motorcycle instructor and a RoSPA diploma holder in motorcycle instruction.
National Road Safety Conference
The 2014 National Road Safety Conference is being hosted by Road Safety GB South East region at The Grand in Brighton, 25-26 November. The event is co-sponsored by Colas and AA DriveTech.
More than 140 people have already registered to attend and 13 organisations have booked to exhibit alongside the conference.
