A charity that supports the families and friends of those bereaved by fatal road collisions has been awarded a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for the quality of post-crash care it provides.
Founded in 1995, the Road Victims Trust (RVT) provides free emotional and practical support to people affected by fatal road collisions in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire.
The RVT works in partnership with police forces and road safety partnerships across the three counties. Its skilled team of volunteers and coordinating staff delivers face-to face-counselling and support for as long as is needed.
In 2015, the RVT supported in excess of 500 people who were affected by the 84 deaths on the roads in its area of operation.
Established in 1987 and managed by RoadSafe, the Prince Michael Awards recognise outstanding road safety achievement and innovation worldwide.
Lyn Hesse, chair of trustees of RVT, said “We are all very proud and honoured to win an award of such international standing.
“This is a tribute to all of the RVT staff, volunteers and partners who work tirelessly to provide the service. This type of support is, quite simply, not available elsewhere.
“We know that what we do provides hope to rebuild the lives of so many devastated people”.
The 2016 winners will receive their awards from HRH Prince Michael of Kent at the scheme’s annual luncheon at The Savoy in London on 13 December.
