Road Safety Wales (RSW) has announced the winners of two competitions which challenged young people to get creative in order to promote the anti drink/drug drive message.

The competitions, both of which tied in with the launch of the All Wales 2016 festive anti drink/drug drive campaign, focussed on multimedia elements such as animations and posters.

The winners received their prizes at the festive campaign launch event in Merthyr Tydfil on 1 December.

The first competition, the RSW Christmas poster competition, was won by four ‘outstanding’ individuals, including Megan White of Bedwas High School, Caerphilly, whose poster has been chosen for use by road safety partners across Wales.

The other winners were: Hannah Powell, Tredegar Comprehensive School in Blaenau Gwent; Imogen Williams, Coed Cae School in Carmarthenshire; and Mollie Jones, West Monmouth School in Torfaen.

Susan Storch, chair of RSW, said: “We are very grateful to all those young artists who contributed with their entries.

“A great deal of thought goes into the making of their artwork and I’m sure that the young people involved learn about the consequences of driving under the influence when they are exploring their ideas, researching the topic and creating their excellent posters.”

The multimedia competition challenged schools, colleges and youth groups to devise, perform and record a multimedia presentation with an anti drink/drug drive message.

Participants, aged 11-25 years were encouraged to use a variety of genre including film, music, PowerPoint, poetry and animation – but this year all the winning entries were animations.

The three winners are:

Shannon Buckley of Pembrokeshire College (video above) who used her artistic talent to remind people that it is not just a question of not driving after a night out, but that it is still possible to be over the drink drive limit the morning after.

April Bryant of Pontypool College, Torfaen used stop-motion animation, influenced by the 1975 Soviet Russian animated film ‘The Hedgehog in the Fog’. April utilised subtle imagery and audio to evoke the impact and consequences of this serious subject matter. The subjects of the film are a metaphor for the potential consequences of driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

Joel Langston of Pembrokeshire College used retro style gaming animation in an inventive entry which compares life to a video game. Highlighting the dangers of taking drugs and alcohol and getting behind the wheel, Joel has incorporated the very important message that our actions have real life consequences.

Good to see school pupils & college students participating. I’m sure that being involved and producing their own work has more impact and for a longer period, than just being a spectator in the the slickest professional adverts.
