Sonya Hurt has stepped up to become chair of Road Safety GB, following the organisation’s 2016 AGM which was held in Bristol last week (15 Nov).

Sonya Hurt succeeds Honor Byford who steps down after three years in the post.

Liz Brooker MBE and Matt Pickard have been appointed vice chairs, filling the berths left by Sonya and Ron Paterson, who has stepped down from the Road Safety GB management team.

Sonya Hurt is currently the team manager for road safety at Via East Midlands, a joint venture between Nottinghamshire CC and Cornwall CC formed to deliver a sustainable highways service for Nottinghamshire.

Sonya joined Nottinghamshire County Council more than 23 years ago specialising in the fields of road safety, safety engineering, traffic management and highway design.

Sonya’s recent successes include winning submissions for both the Highways Excellence Awards ‘Road Safety scheme of the year’ and a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award presented to Nottinghamshire for its outstanding contribution to road safety.

In an ever changing local government environment Sonya’s work ethos is to continue to maintain a professional, forward thinking and innovative approach to delivering road safety solutions.

Liz Brooker is road safety and sustainable transport manager at Lewisham Council, having been involved in road safety within the borough for more than three decades.

She is also responsible for delivering the council’s Bikeability cycle training programme and SCP service, road safety campaigns and initiatives, and encouraging smarter travel choices and school and workplace travel plans.

Liz is also Road Safety GB London Region’s press and communications officer, having previously held the position of Road Safety GB national press and PR officer.

In June 2016 Liz was awarded a MBE for services to road safety.

Matt Pickard is senior project officer for casualty reduction strategy at Derbyshire County Council.

Matt joined Derbyshire County Council in 2009 and is responsible for the ETP element of road safety in the county as well as the wider strategy, managing the analytical team and working with partner agencies.

Prior to this Matt served for 30 years in the Derbyshire Constabulary, the last nine years as a roads policing inspector during which time he set up and managed the Force’s Fatal Investigation Unit.
