School crossing patrols (SCPs) in the Vale of Glamorgan region of Wales have seen their contribution to road safety recognised at a regional awards ceremony.

Helen Wilkinson (Barry), David Regan (Penarth, Sully and Dinas Powys) and Alex Daw (Rural Vale) were all given ‘the recognition they deserve’ at the recent Vale Road Safety Awards ceremony.

However the top award on the night, ‘School Crossing Patrol of the Year’, went to Sandra Riggott (pictured right).

Sandra is described as an extremely popular member of the Colcot Primary School community who, in addition to carrying out her regular duties, often visits the school to speak to pupils about road safety, and about her job as a SCP.

The region’s Kerbcraft Child Pedestrian Training Scheme co-ordinators and volunteers were also thanked at the awards’ ceremony, with a special award presented to Megan Blayney on behalf of all the volunteers.

Councillor Peter King (pictured left), Vale of Glamorgan Council cabinet member for building services, highways & transportation, said: “The SCP service and Kerbcraft scheme were established to keep children safe whilst out and about, on and near our busy roads.

“The success of any scheme relies upon the commitment and dedication of the individuals involved. Standing in the pouring rain and watching drivers, whilst teaching a child road safety and providing a safe crossing location, takes a very dedicated and enthusiastic individual.”
