What has hindsight taught us?

Two road safety professionals will use their joint presentation at National Conference to highlight their successes in recent years, and what they would have done differently with the benefit of hindsight.

Andrew Bradley, sustainable transport manager, and Trish Hirst, road safety officer, City of York Council, will present in the local focus session at the 2015 National Road Safety Conference*.

Five years after the end of the Specific Road Safety Grant, this presentation will explain what the City of York road safety team has done right, and more importantly, what hindsight has taught them – particularly looking at the challenge of providing meaningful data and evidence to back up instincts and heuristic knowledge.

Andrew Bradley is responsible for local public transport, sustainable travel and road safety delivery in York.

He has been significantly involved in the delivery of a range of road safety initiatives and has managed the team through a number of challenges. Andrew currently sits on the ‘95 Alive’ Steering Group, working in partnership with North Yorkshire County Council, Highways England as well as the police and fire & rescue services.

Trish Hirst became City of York’s road safety officer in 2007 and her wide and varied role includes management of the cycle/pedestrian training team, the School Crossing Patrol Service, and working in partnership with other agencies to investigate and address community concerns about speeding.

She was also part of the Road Safety GB regional group which won a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award in 2014 for its work to improve the safety of cyclists.
