The Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety’s Wasted Lives young driver education programme has been named Safety Project of the Year by the North West Institute of Highways and Transportation.

Aimed at changing attitudes, influencing behaviour and saving lives, the Wasted Lives programme challenges young drivers to think about the risks they take whilst driving and gives them a wake-up call to the consequences their actions can have on themselves and their passengers, as well as their family and friends.

Since its launch in September 2008, the programme has been delivered to more than 2,700 young people across Lancashire.

Rhiannon Leeds, Wasted Lives’ coordinator, said: “The research we have undertaken to test the impact of the programme shows that it is having a very positive effect on the attitudes of young drivers and their passengers – especially on factors that contribute to serious crashes such as speed, seatbelts, distractions and drink or drug driving.”
