Steve Kenward, Chief Executive, Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA)
Presentation: Motorcycles are the solution, not the problem
MCIA wants to see a much larger reduction in the number of casualties among motorcyclists. It believes this is achievable, but will require a cultural shift among road safety professionals and road planners where motorcycles are concerned.
MCIA recently launched a joint policy document with the National Police Chiefs' Council, which argues that exclusion of motorcycles in mainstream transport policy planning is indefensible as a long term strategy for improving motorcycle safety. It calls for engagement with the opportunities presented by motorcycling in terms of reducing congestion, CO2 emissions, easing pressure on city centre parking and providing affordable personal transport.
This presentation will propose that ignoring motorcycles in national and local transport planning prolongs the current level of casualties.
Steve Kenward joined the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) as CEO in 2008.
Before that, he held senior positions with Heron Suzuki GB Ltd. and Suzuki Motor Corporation, as well as serving as CEO for the 350,000-member Civil Service Motoring Association.
