The driver must be ready and able to resume driving control when prompted by the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>In August, the Government launched a call for evidence, seeking views from industry on the role of the driver and proposed rules on the use of this system to pave the way towards introducing it safely in Great Britain, within the current legal framework.<\/p>\n<p>This presentation will provide an update on the subject.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-589\" src=\"https:\/\/roadsafetygb.org.uk\/festival\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Duncan-Kay-300x295.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roadsafetygb.org.uk\/festival\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Duncan-Kay-300x295.jpg 300w, https:\/\/roadsafetygb.org.uk\/festival\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Duncan-Kay-768x755.jpg 768w, https:\/\/roadsafetygb.org.uk\/festival\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Duncan-Kay.jpg 978w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Duncan Kay, Head of Vehicle Engineering, Department for Transport<\/h3>\n<p>Duncan works in the International Vehicle Standards Division of the UK government\u2019s Department for Transport. Duncan is a mechanical engineer with over 30 years\u2019 experience, including 12 years at Ford Motor Company where he started his career.<\/p>\n<p>Duncan joined the Department for Transport in 2014 and was the lead author of \u201cThe Pathway to Driverless Cars\u201d \u2013 the Department\u2019s 2015 review of regulations for driverless cars and other automated vehicle technologies.<\/p>\n<p>He now oversees three teams of engineers working on international vehicle type approval legislation and led the UK\u2019s involvement in negotiating the UN-ECE regulation for Automated Lane Keeping systems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-588-0-2\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell panel-grid-cell-empty\" ><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Government is currently considering a move to permit the use of an automated system that is capable of taking control of a vehicle travelling at low speeds on a motorway.
