1 in 60 young male drivers experiences a crash that kills or injures: Brake

One young male driver in every 60 experiences a road crash involving death or injury to themselves, a passenger, or another road user, according to new research by Brake, the road safety charity.

Julie Townsend, Brake’s campaign director, presented the research at the charity’s 9th Road Safety Forum International Conference in London (30/06/11), which focused on eradicating deaths and injuries caused by young male drivers.

She also highlighted the inadequacies of the UK’s learning to drive system, while at the same time outlining Brake’s call for a system of Graduated Driver Licensing in the UK.

Julie Townsend said: “There is an urgent need for the Government to show leadership in tackling young driver crashes. It’s unacceptable that so many young male drivers are involved in these traumatic events that can have a lasting impact on their lives.

“We have evidence that a system of Graduated Driver Licensing would be highly effective in helping to put a stop to this needless carnage.”
