Former road safety minister Andrew Jones has left the DfT to take up a new post at the Treasury, with new minister Jesse Norman expected to pick up the road safety portfolio.

Appointed in May 2015, Mr Jones leaves the post to become exchequer secretary to the Treasury.

During Mr Jones’ two-year stint in office, the DfT has published the £1.2bn ‘cycling and walking investment strategy’ and doubled penalties for mobile phone offences.

Mr Jones presented by video to delegates attending the 2015 National Road Safety Conference in Nottingham, and spoke in person at the Young Driver Focus 2016 event in London.

He worked under two transport secretaries, Sir Patrick McLoughlin and Chris Grayling, and was generally well liked and respected by the road safety community.

Mr Jones appears likely to be replaced as road safety minister by Jesse Norman, although there has been no formal confirmation of this.

Mr Norman, MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire, moves to the DfT from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy where he held the post of minister for industry and energy since July 2016.

Between 2010-2015, Mr Norman was a member of the Treasury Select Committee and chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Employee Ownership. In June 2015 he was elected chair of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee.

Mr Norman was awarded Spectator Parliamentarian of the Year and The House Backbencher of the Year in 2012.

As previously reported, the rest of the ministerial line up at the DfT remains unchanged, with Chris Grayling retaining the top job of Secretary of State for Transport.
