Leeds students experienced first hand the devastating consequences of a car crash.
During a talk by RSO Dave Sloman, 17-year-old health and beauty student Jessica Kendrick, recently released from hospital following a road traffic collision, was introduced to the 50-strong audience.
The shock among the audience was obvious as Jessica, who had not been wearing a seatbelt when the car her boyfriend was driving was involved in a collision, bravely entered the room. Jessica’s wounds were such that no amount of make up would cover the physical scars that she had sustained. And, as Dave explained, the mental scars would prove even more difficult to overcome.
Luckily, Jessica’s injuries were not all that they seemed – they were the result of some realistic casualty make up applied by Leah Francis and Sarah Durrant, media make-up students from York College.
The event, part of Leeds road safety unit’s pre driver programme, highlighted to students how vulnerable they are if they chose to travel unrestrained in a car.
Vicky Aird, Park Lane College Leeds, said: "It comes as a shock to students to learn how many young women end up with serious injuries because they have been involved in a car crash and were not wearing a seatbelt."
Jessica appeared in the local press and ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots of her will now be made into a ‘Because you’re worth it’ poster campaign.
