Bigger and better Young Driver Awards back for 2016

Following a successful debut earlier this year, the FirstCar Young Driver Road Safety Awards will return in 2016, but this time with an extended range of categories.

The 2016 FirstCar Young Driver Road Safety Awards are sponsored by Road Safety Support* (RSS) and will be presented at the Young Driver Focus event in London on 20 April 2016.

FirstCar conceived and launched this new awards scheme to recognise the work of road safety professionals in seeking to reduce casualties amongst young drivers. The three awards categories in 2015 attracted more than 60 entries.

For 2016, there are six awards categories: Best Education and Training Initiative; Partnership Scheme; Young Driver Campaign; New Scheme; Sustainable Intervention; and Private Sector Initiative.

For all awards the judging panel will be looking for schemes with clear and measurable aims and objectives and for evidence of evaluation.

James Evans, founder of FirstCar, said: “We were delighted with the success of our inaugural awards and we are keen to develop them in 2016 to recognise all the hard work that goes on in this sector, often unrewarded.’’

“We’ve introduced three additional categories for 2016, for new schemes, sustainable initiatives and another specifically for schemes from private sector organisations. The latter has been introduced in recognition of the excellent work in the private sector to try and improve the safety of young drivers.”

Trevor Hall, managing director, Road Safety Support, said: ‘We are delighted to be supporting the Young Driver Focus Awards 2016.

“Young drivers are one of the most at risk groups, our statistics show that the first six months of driving are the most vulnerable. Working together – police, partnerships, local authorities, third sector and private sector – we have the ability to reduce the numbers of those being killed and seriously injured our roads.

“We are looking forward to see the applications for the awards and more importantly how these interventions, projects and ideas can translate into casualty reduction, which will ultimately save lives."

The 2016 Awards will open on 1 January 2016. Entries need to be submitted by 12 February and the shortlist will be announced week commencing 22 February. The awards will be presented at Young Driver Focus 2016, which is being held at the Royal Automobile Club (RAC), Pall Mall in London on 20 April 2016.
