The Biker Down course which is delivered by many fire and rescue teams from across the country will be presented to delegates at the National Road Safety Conference later this year.
The 2014 National Road Safety Conference is being hosted by Road Safety GB South East Region, and held at The Grand in Brighton on 25-26 November. More than 170 people have already registered to attend.
Originally developed by Kent Fire & Rescue Service (KFRS), Biker Down provides bikers with advice about what to do if a fellow rider comes off their bike. The course covers scene management, first aid and what works when it comes to making yourself more visible to other road users.
The scene management element is based on operational experience of what to expect at the scene of a collision. The first aid is specific to the type of injuries likely to occur in a motorcycle incident. The third module is based on research by Kevin Williams MSc of Survival Skills Rider Training, a BTEC-qualified advanced instructor with more than 30 years’ professional riding experience. Kevin used his higher degree background to research the ‘Science of Being Seen’ module on behalf of KFRS.
Biker Down will be presented by Jim Sanderson, founder of Biker Down, and Lawrence Pater, both from KFRS.
Jim Sanderson (left) has been a firefighter with KFRS for 14 years and a biker for 21 years. He is based Ashford Fire Station and a member of the Kent Fire Bike team, a DSA motorcycle instructor, and a road traffic collision instructor.
Lawrence Pater (right) is a station manager with responsibility for training within KFRS. He has served 25 years as an operational fire fighter, the last 14 years in command roles.

I remember when I was the Assistant County Development officer of St. John Ambulance association Greater Manchester in the later part of the 1980s. As a keen motorcyclist I endeavoured to introduce a course specifically for motorcyclists but the powers that be at the time were more interested in the financial benefits of First Aid At Work courses, so it never got off the ground. I am pleased that eventually the benefit of first aid amongst motorcyclists has been acknowledged, albeit a decade or so later.
Going back many years to my training days with the RAC/ACU in the early 60s we did a 26 hour course on 13 Sunday mornings, and included in that was an element of first aid. Well done now that it’s nationally recognised.

I’d just like to make one thing clear – the third module on Biker Down as originally delivered by Kent Fire and Rescue is based on research by, and delivered by Kevin Williams of Survival Skills Rider Training (www.survivalskills.co.uk) on behalf of KFRS. A simplified version of my work is then offered as part of the ‘Biker Down’ package that other FRS can choose to use if they wish.
