Caerphilly drivers given the ‘Option’

13.46 | 27 November 2009 |

Drivers not wearing a seatbelt or using a mobile phone were stopped outside schools as part of a crackdown to make Caerphilly’s roads safer.

Lorry Davies, Caerphilly’s RSO, organised the ‘Mini Options Event’ in partnership with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Gwent Police.

Offenders were offered the ‘option’ of either paying a fine, plus three penalty points for using a mobile, or watching a 10-minute presentation at Abercarn Fire Station showing the consequences of being distracted at the wheel.

Only one driver chose to pay the fixed penalty rather than watch the presentation, and one motorist said: “It was an excellent way of reminding everyone of the consequences of not wearing a seatbelt.”
