Calderdale launches wheelchair safety campaign

12.06 | 19 July 2011 |

A campaign has been launched in Calderdale which encourages taxi drivers and other specially-adapted transport providers to ensure wheelchair users are secure in their vehicle.

The idea for the ‘Safety on the Move’ campaign was suggested to Calderdale Council’s Road Safety Team by Ann Holgate, who lost her son in 2009 shortly after he was injured in a collision involving a specially-adapted taxi.

All of Calderdale’s hackney carriages and access buses are given a sticker to display on the back of their vehicle with the message: ‘We Care. We Will Secure Your Chair’. Calderdale wheelchair users can also get a sticker for the back of their wheelchairs, with the message: ‘Please Care. Secure My Chair.’

For more information contact Bridget Kusyj, Calderdale Road Safety Team, on 01422 392144 or 392803.
