Voting for the road safety song with the ‘Y Factor’ is now open, and the public are being urged to vote for their favourite song.

Now in its third year, Y-Factor is the brainchild of the Birmingham Road Safety Partnership. The Partnership says the competition has been highly successful and ‘achieved a 36% reduction in child road traffic collisions in the first year it was run’. It has also received a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award (PMIRSA).

All 300 primary schools in Birmingham are invited to take part. The judges select three finalists who produce music videos, which are then uploaded to the Y Factor website. The winners get to record their song in a studio and own a copy on CD.

The schools in the running this year are Moor Hall Primary School, St Teresa’s Catholic Primary School and Whittington Primary School. The three schools are looking to follow in the footsteps of Cottesbrooke Junior School who were crowned champions in 2010.

Voting will close on 9 December and the winners will be announced on 12 December. Voting is free and people can vote multiple times.

Congratulations to Trudi Maybury and her team at the Safer Birmingham Partnership for the inspirational way in which school children are encouraged to embrace Road Safety. I had great difficulty in choosing which school to vote for in this years Y Factor as all the children from the three participating schools were so fantastic. However, in my humble opinion Moor Hall Primary School is the front runner.
    Well done!
