More than 300 schoolchildren pedalled through the streets of Westport in Ireland in a new initiative to make them safer cyclists.

Specially-trained garda cyclists are passing on skills in a competition that could help keep children safe on Ireland’s roads. Each team of three cyclists was accompanied by a judge and tested on a wide range of cycling abilities, at the event on 6 May.

Noel Gibbons, Mayo County Council’s RSO, said: “It is crucial that people learn how to cycle safely from a young age, and we aim to show them some of the key aspects. This is also a great way of showing pupils that there are very real, much healthier and environmentally friendly alternatives to using the car.”
