Competition raises awareness of ‘morning after’ drink driving

A competition has been launched which raises awareness of how long it takes for alcohol to pass through the body.

The competition is the first phase of the 2014 Morning After drink drive campaign which has been running for several years. The campaign website includes a ‘morning after calculator’ which helps people work out when they will be alcohol-free and thus safe to drive.

Morning After 2014 will comprise four campaigns – the competition, a football-related promotion to coincide with the World Cup, and two further campaigns in the second half of the year.

The competition launched on 1 March and runs until 30 April. Entrants are challenged to answer three questions about how long it takes for alcohol to pass through the body. Entry is via the campaign website where the answers to the questions can be found, or the campaign Facebook page.

In terms of prizes, there is £500 of Halfords’ gift cards up for grabs – £250 for the winner and 10 runner-up prizes of £25.

Sally Bartrum, Morning After project manager, said: “People are very often surprised at just how long it takes for alcohol to clear the body, and how long after drinking it is before the body is free of alcohol and safe to drive.

“By tasking entrants with finding the answers to three questions, the competition is designed to raise awareness of this issue. The intention is to help normally-responsible people avoid unwittingly driving while over the limit the morning after drinking – thereby reducing the risk of a drink drive conviction, or much worse causing a crash and casualties.”

10 road safety teams are already participating in the 2014 Morning After campaign.
