Council deploys masseuses to reduce sleep related casualties

09.11 | 24 July 2009 |

Professional masseuses are to be used in an effort to reduce the number of sleep related crashes on Co Mayo’s (Ireland) roads.

New research by the Road Safety Authority shows that more than one in 10 drivers have admitted to nodding off or falling asleep while driving. The findings reinforce research suggesting that driver fatigue could be a contributory factor in one in five driver deaths in Ireland.

Professional masseuses will take a hands-on approach to the problem by offering head, hand and feet massages at Freemans Service Station on the N5 on Friday 31 July. Drivers will also be able to test their reactions with a driving simulated brake testing activity while they enjoy a free cup of tea.

Noel Gibbons, RSO, said: “It’s time to scotch the mistaken belief that you can fight off sleep by turning up the stereo or opening the window. To really stay alert on a long drive you need to be taking a 15-minute break every two hours.”
