Road safety practitioners are being encouraged to develop their skillset and experience, by taking a course that will enable them to support and teach people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to travel independently.

Leeds City Council can deliver the Open Awards Level 2 award in Skills for Teaching Independent Travel training course, over a two-day period, at locations across the UK, including its office space in Leeds City Centre.

The course teaches attendees how to:

  • Problem solve during travel training
  • Understand and implement the processes for teaching independent travel

It also includes a practical activity which enables delegates to risk assess routes and offers a valuable networking opportunity with like minded individuals.

The next courses that have spaces are:

  • Central London – 19-20 February
  • Leeds City Centre – 27-28 February

Leeds City Council aims to deliver courses monthly from March 2025.

The council says: “As a qualified travel trainer, you are equipped to support and teach people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to travel independently.

“Travel independence is essential when preparing young people for adulthood, as it develops life skills and builds confidence. Travel training also can save local authorities hundreds of thousands of pounds.”

The training course has received positive feedback from participants who have praised its effectiveness in enhancing their skills and knowledge.

One said: “The training was extremely useful and helpful to me. I was able to take a lot of information back to my team at Greenwich and felt it is going to be very beneficial for us to begin our in-house travel training for the future.”

Another added: “Amazing trainer’s knowledge supported with real life examples when real situations were discussed and learned from. Thank you, great training.”
