Cycle training helps pupils stay safe and develop skills

Pupils from almost 100 primary schools across South Lanarkshire are taking part in the Scottish Cycle Training Scheme.

The scheme provides basic training in cycling skills, the Highway Code, an overview of bicycle maintenance and ownership and is intended as a starting point for a lifelong interest in cycling. It allows the pupils to develop the skills and knowledge to cycle safely and competently at all times.

The practical training teaches basic control exercises, emergency stop, overtaking and right and left turn maneuvers, focusing on observation skills and correct road positioning.

The classroom based work covers the Highway Code, bike maintenance, journey planning and environmental awareness, with all activities linking to the Curriculum for Excellence.
