Donation will improve road safety in Kosovo

In a move to improve road safety beyond these shores, Medway’s road safety team has given its old school crossing patrol uniforms to a local charity.

SEED is a Medway-based, volunteer-led charity that works with disadvantaged people oversees. At present the charity is working in partnership with police and fire officers in Kosovo to highlight road safety issues.

As well as the SCP uniforms, the charity has received donations of overhead projectors and computers to aid with education, advice and guidance.

Ray Avenell, from SEED, said: “With almost all schoolchildren in Kosovo walking to and from school, especially in the dark in winter months, the crossing patrol uniforms will enable us to introduce road safety concepts and help us lobby for more resources to reduce accidents and increase awareness.”

Andy McGrath, Medway Council’s head of frontline services, said: “The number of people being killed and injured in road traffic crashes globally has reached epidemic level, with 3,500 people dying each day in traffic related incidents and around 50 million injured per year. We are pleased the charity approached us and that we could recycle our out-of-date items to help such a good cause.”

Medway Council recently introduced new uniforms for its school crossing patrols to bring them in line with current road safety guidelines.
